OUR HISTORY - Dream of a Mission Congregation
St. Paul Lutheran Church had grown into a
large congregation served by three pastors in the 1980's. The pastors and
leaders of the congregation envisioned the need for another Lutheran church in
New Braunfels. In 1986 the St. Paul Mission Church Committee contacted
Clemente Saenz, regional mission director of The American Lutheran Church, and
told him of the need for a new congregation. The committee investigated
possible sites for the mission church. On 8 September 1986 a
committee, composed of Ruby Bading, chair; Bob Janca, Fritz Welsch, Craig
Sagebiel, Russell Stollewerk, Pastor Charles DeHaven and Pastor Ron Walter, sent
Saenz a letter recommending an area near the new Memorial Elementary School
between FM 1044 and FM 725 and between County Line Road and Interstate 35 as the
most desirable site for the mission.
Clemente Saenz requested authorization for a new congregation from the office of
the secretary of The American Lutheran Church. He based the need for a new
congregation on the following factors: 1) St. Paul is so large that it cannot
provide for those who would prefer a smaller congregation. 2) The location of
New Braunfels in the Austin-San Antonio corridor and its growth from a small
German community to a larger metropolitan area. 3) The request by local
Lutherans, some 20-25 families of St. Paul are expected to be part of the new
mission with the blessing and encouragement of the pastors and people of St.
Paul. The goal of the mission is to be self-supporting within five years.
William Hanson, Program Director of The ALC granted the request by letter on
March 25, 1987.
